In Kenya, just north of Tanzania, there were reports of a tragic massacre of Christian brothers and sisters killed and wounded during their Sunday morning church service July 1.
NAIROBI, Kenya (AP) — Gunmen killed two policemen guarding a church, snatched their rifles and then opened fire on the congregation from inside and out on Sunday, killing 15 people and wounding 40, security officials said.
Two gunmen entered the simple wooden church in the city of Garissa at around 10:15 a.m. Sunday, while two others waited outside, police commander Philip Ndolo said. When the congregation fled the attack inside, they ran straight into another hail of bullets from gunmen outside, he said. At least one grenade was detonated in the attack.
Overturned wooden benches littered the church afterward. A victim wearing a simple blue dress lay on the sandy earth outside. Witnesses reported seeing the four gunmen flee in dark blue outfits and masks.
“We were deep in prayers preparing to give our offerings,” said a visibly shaken David Mwange, a churchgoer. “We first heard a loud bang from outside which we mistook to be coming from the rooftops. We then had gun shots which made us to lie down. Within no time we had gunshots all over. Everybody was shouting and wailing in pain.”
Reports state the gunmen at fault are members of al-Shabab, the most dangerous militant Islamic group in Somalia.
Fifty-three years ago the Arusha Bible College began with the express purpose to train men and women to win Africa for Jesus. The spirit of Islam will not prevail. What God declares, He accomplishes for His purpose to save and redeem. He is not willing that any perish.
These are evil days but we know that we have been commissioned to redeem the time to go forth with the high praises of God on our lips and a two edged sword in our hand which is the Word of God (Psalm 149: 6-7). This is not the time to become fearful and run because God has not given us a spirit of fear but of power, love and a sound mind. ( II Timothy 1:7) It is time to stand and fight. It is time to do everything we can to prepare men and woman to take the Good News that Jesus is the Way, the Truth and Life. John 14:6
You heard the clarion call and joined us to build this dormitory. God is pleased and promises to bless you for the investment you have made to carry forth the Word of Life. God knows the needs of African Moons. He is our provision. God bless you for linking your faith and resources with ours so that together we will “see the wonderful sight of the sons of God coming into their own.” II Timothy 4:8 (Philips)
Joel and William Geter, Jr. are leaving for Arusha July 15th. During the past few weeks I have had an increased sense of urgency to pray for our Tanzania family and the Arusha Bible College. We are nearing the finish line of this first project and it won’t be long until students will be living in decent rooms, furnished with beds and study areas for them to prepare to take the living Word of God to their villages and beyond.
We need your prayers and your continued support to cross the finish line by September, in order to see the dorm completed with room for more students to come to the Arusha Bible College.
We need to hear from you today! The cost for the airlines tickets for Joel and William Geter to go to Arusha July 15th is $6,000.
“Keep a cool head. Stay alert. The Devil is poised to pounce, and would like nothing better than to catch you napping. Keep your guard up. You’re not the only ones plunged into these hard times. It’s the same with Christians all over the world. So keep a firm grip on the faith. The suffering won’t last forever. It won’t be long before this generous God who has great plans for us in Christ —eternal and glorious plans they are! — will have you put together and on your feet for good. He gets the last word, yes, he does.” I Peter 5:8-11 (The Message)
