“Don’t lay-up treasure for yourselves on earth where moth and rust consume and where thieves break in and steal; But lay-up treasures in heaven where neither moth nor rust consume and where thieves break in and steal.”  Matthew 6:19-20 – World English Bible

I was a sophomore in high school when I heard my dad speak on the topic of “treasure”.  He was the featured speaker for the Junior-Senior Banquet at Rift Valley Academy, a boarding school in Kenya for missionary’s kids.  As I listened to him that evening a seed was watered that was forming to direct me to my life’s purpose, partnering with the people of Tanzania.

Mail Attachment-2Today we received an email from Golden Mgonzo the founder and director of the Shalom Center Orphanage asking how much progress we have had in fundraising to help the children.  We met Director Golden eight years ago when he was the Headmaster of Bethel Primary School and also reaching out to the street children of Arusha. He was in a good position and received a consistent salary. But in 2005 he left that security to start Shalom Center and devote himself full time to the desperate children living on the streets of Arusha.

Today there are over 50 orphans under his immediate care and he visits 50 more living in dire situations around Arusha.  He did not wait until he had all the finances to provide for the needs of these kids.  He simply heard the voice of God and acted.

A Foundation in England came forward shortly after he stepped out on faith and funded Shalom monthly with the budget of $5000.00  to provide shelter, counseling, schooling and three meals a day for the children. Unfortunately, in early fall of 2015 the Foundation ran out of funds. Shalom raises funds among the business community and churches of Arusha, but it is not enough.

Last June, partners of African Moons sent a substantial gift without knowing the drastic need that Shalom was about to incur.  The donation of a wonderful couple, along with others, helped African Moons sustain Shalom Center through January of this year.

In November 2015 after dedicating Bruton Dormitory, we visited Shalom with the team of African Moons partners that journeyed with us to Tanzania. From that group of friends another financial investment was made that helped get them through the weeks that followed.

As you would expect, with our family history in Tanzania and the wonderful people we have met, many opportunities await African Moons. For example; there are pastors and Bible School students to equip, Christian Private Schools and Government Schools are asking for educational materials, teachers have asked us to conduct workshops for them – in public and private schools and help new pastors plant churches.

Yet in our hearts and minds we see those orphans at Shalom Center. The Center has reduced their staff of counselors and helpers in order to cut their budget. But it still takes about $3000.00 a month to operate and care for the children. Headmaster Golden is struggling to make it. Please continue praying that we can raise funds to help them. Pray that we sell Mom Vann’s 67’ Ford Mustang. We thought we had it sold twice but the folks did not follow through. When we do sell it, those funds will be used to bless the orphanage and the Bible School.

Thus far we have received  $850 but we want to send them a $1000.00 each month. I believe that there are friends of African Moons and new partners who could make this goal a reality. The children of Shalom Center are opportunities for someone to invest their treasure.

Thank you for sowing your seed into African Moons. Together let us pray that God moves on the hearts of His people and let us see this miracle happen soon.

Tanzania for Jesus!
